Jack's
Story
In our June 21, 2005 update, we told you
about Jumping Jack Flash's injuries and painful
recovery. Now for the good news. Jack finished his
rehab and was settled into his new and loving
home. Last year, he even won a Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Award
and was the "best dog" at the
April 2006 wedding of his new master and mistress.
Jack's now a happy dog!

Warning Irish Terrier Owners!
Do Not Let Your Dogs Run Loose!!
(lead
story from the June 21, 2005 edition of Irish Terrier
News from Redloch Kennel)
This is a cautionary tale that we hope will
serve as a warning to all dog owners, whether your pets
are show
quality Irish Terriers or mixed breeds. This is
Redloch's Jumping Jack Flash's story. This photo shows
Jack at the Nolan River Kennel Club competition. As you
can see in the photo, Jack is a wonderful show quality
Irish Terrier. Soon after the photo was taken, Jack went
to live with a new owner where he was allowed to roam
the owner's open farm. That's when tragedy struck. Most
likely, Jack was kicked by a large farm animal. What we
know for sure is that he endured a couple of frigid, wet
nights outside before his owner found the seriously
injured Jack. His injuries, as seen in the x-ray images
below, included a broken femur and a dislocated hip.

As the above X-rays show, repairs
have thus far included surgical implant of a steel
rod down the center of Jack's femur, a plate with
8 screws holding the broken femur together, and a
"toggle" holding the dislocated hip in
place with a nylon fishing line.
Jack has finished rehabilitation now. He
did workouts on a submerged treadmill at Gulf
Coast Vet. Specialists 2 times per week, plus
electro treatment and stretching at home twice a
day. The rest of his time was spent crated so that
he didn't re-injure himself.

So, these words of warning to all dog
owners: If you want to avoid spending the thousands
of dollars that surgery and treatment will cost and the
heartbreak of seeing your loved pet suffer through
medical procedures and a long, painful recovery, please
keep your pet safe in your home or fenced backyard. Allowing
a pet to run free and out of your sight is just asking
for heartbreak!
